Thanks to Fortnite and the Zero Point, the Marvel and DC Universes have the opportunity to collide (as proven in both publishers' Fortnite crossovers)
Warning! Spoilers ahead for Marvel x Fortnite: Zero War #1
Fortnite's respective comic series with Marvel and DC have created a secret crossover between the two universes. Thanks to the Zero Point and its ability to open gateways to other realities, Fortnite's new Zero War comic with Marvel has confirmed that the events of Batman/Fortnite: Zero Point is just as canonical. While the new ties may be indirect currently, it does support the possibility for a future Marvel/DC crossover of epic proportions.
As previously revealed in Fortnite's established lore from their Batman crossover (and the game itself), a group known as the Imagined Order (or IO) are the primary antagonists who threaten the stability of the omniverse in their quest for knowledge and power. Not only that, but they also manipulate the Zero Point to travel the omniverse, often pulling the greatest fighters from multiple realities to battle on Fortnite Island in a constant loop of conflicts. While they can be saved from the Loop, copies known as snapshots are created that continue fighting. Case in point, when Batman was sent to the Island and broke himself out of the Loop, he met other beings who had broken their loops as well. Together they actively resisted the IO while trying to get back to their respective realities. However, the Imagined Order also joined forces with DC's Lex Luthor, Deathstroke, and the Batman Who Laughs.
Now, the new Marvel x Fortnite: Zero War #1 is here from Donald Mustard and Christos Gage (the same team who wrote DC's Zero Point). Featuring art by Sergio Davila, the new issue sees Spider-Man recruiting help from his own universe after spending some time on Fortnite Island. While he missed the in-game crossover with Marvel known as the Nexus War in 2020, he and the Daily Bugle came to the Island at the beginning of Fortnite Chapter 3 in 2021. Saved from the Loop by the Foundation and his team of heroes known as the Seven, Spider-Man has joined the resistance movement against Doctor Slone and the Imagined Order. However, the death of the Fortnite character Fishstick was confirmed to be a snapshot and the real Fishstick died in Batman/Fortnite: Zero War. Furthermore, the end of this first issue reveals that none other than Doctor Doom has been recruited by the Imagined Order which means both he and Lex Luthor now belong to the same omniversal organization.
While the ties may be small now, the fact that the events of both series exist in the same reality that is Fortnite creates some exciting potential for the future. Marvel and DC haven't had a crossover since Kurt Busiek and George Perez's JLA/Avengers in 2003. Given the challenges that occurred to get that crossover off the ground, it's been unlikely that the two publishers would work together again. However, Fortnite's Epic Games clearly has good relationships with both, perhaps enough to motivate some greater cooperation for a true Marvel/DC crossover.
The fact that there are now Marvel and DC villains who both belong to the Imagined Order and that the heroes of Fortnite have fought alongside both Batman and Spider-Man is quite impressive in and of itself. If anything the seeds have been sown for an even bigger crossover than what's currently happening in Zero War, one where Marvel and DC heroes unite in earnest to save the omniverse together. If anyone can make it happen, it looks as though it's Epic Games and Fortnite.
