Do you really know how to spell fiancé? Have you ever tried to explain Fortnite to your grandparents? These are just some of the questions students asked themselves as comedians Caitlin Peluffo and Matteo Lane offered hilarious solutions at the recent Campus Activity Board (CAB) comedy show that took place on Thursday, Oct. 6 in the Annex. The Campus Activities Board had been hard at work promoting the event these last few weeks, and last Thursday students finally gathered to watch the show. Lane, who has appeared on several late night shows, starred in the Netflix series The Comedy Lineup and uploads pasta making videos on YouTube, has a lot going on. He is currently in the middle of a fall tour throughout the country, but he still expressed his excitement at being able to perform for college students, saying it gives him an opportunity to speak to young people. The show began with a 20 minute set from opener Caitlin Peluffo, whose large personality and unadulterated material were truly entertaining. She spoke about her relationship with her partner (because she can’t spell fiancé) and his (often futile) attempts to appear more assertive than her, recalling her rough upbringing in Queens and the misadventures of her 20’s, which the audience responded to positively. That is, however, until she zeroed in on one young man in the audience who was not responding as enthusiastically, thus prompting a five-minute dialogue between them where Peluffo tried to decode his apprehension for comedic effect. One can conclude from this bit that Peluffo really knows how to connect with any audience member despite their responsiveness to her set, and in turn, entertain the rest of the crowd. Thanks to Peluffo, the crowd was properly warmed up to receive Matteo Lane who walked out on stage moments later. From the get go, Lane was instantly tuned into the audience and offering jokes about his hatred for pickles, masking his gay voice when playing Fortnite with 12-year olds and how his friend Nick sounds like Squidward and blacks out on rollercoasters. One especially hilarious moment was when he talked about how a woman left an odd comment on an Instagram video he posted making carbonara. He stipulated that carbonara only uses egg yolks, but this woman’s comment said that he should have saved the egg whites to give to someone in need. Lane continued with something to the effect of “Could you imagine how insane I would look if I went out on the streets of New York and gave a homeless person a bowl full of raw egg whites, which already look suspicious enough?” However sidesplitting Lane’s prepared material was, the most memorable part of the show was when Lane decided to take questions from the audience, saying it was something he isn’t able to do at his regular shows. Lane gave hysterical responses to questions regarding his thoughts on kidney stones, the social media app BeReal, and if a young woman in the audience should text back the man who lifted her Dirty Dancing style a few days prior. Lane’s honest, unfiltered thoughts gave the audience a true sense of connection with him. He opened up when one audience member asked about how he got started in comedy, saying he didn’t think he could have a career in comedy because there were no gay people performing when he was young. He elaborated on how seeing comedians like Joan Rivers and Kathy Griffin talk positively about gay people catalyzed his jump into comedy. This exchange reminded the audience of how recently our society still shut out openly queer people from artforms like comedy and gave Lane’s show a deeper aspect to it that is sure to connect with audiences in the future. All in all, Matteo Lane delivered a profoundly hilarious, thought-provoking show that students enthusiastically enjoyed, and one that signaled to CAB organizers that he would be most welcome back to the College at any point in the future. As one of the most anticipated on-campus events, it was certainly a large success not only for Lane and Peluffo, but for student fans as well.loli fortnite
