John Cena has jumped out of WWE 2K22 and into a Battle Royale of a different kind! Fortnite has recently added a new "Epic SummerSlam" John Cena pack to it's in game item shop. The new set in partnership with WWE includes a John Cena Entrance Gear Player Skin with an alternate ring gear style. It also includes a "Five Digit Slapper Pickaxe, WWE Championship Back Bling, and U Can’t C Me Emote." Even if you aren't interested in Fortnite, the timing and name of the pack is interesting for wrestling fans to say the least. In the run-up to SummerSlam, it seemed pretty clear that WWE was building towards some kind of angle involving John Cena and Theory. Cena stated on social media prior to his 20th anniversary celebration on Monday Night RAW, that Theory needed an attitude adjustment. This came after the up-and-coming United States Champion had taunted Cena on Twitter, writing "Happy birthday John Cena! Sorry I'm a better U.S champ than you..." The former multi-time world champion then responded with the following. "Everyone understands that you have far more talent, strength, and gifts than I ever had. Don’t apologize for that. Ever. An apology should come 20 years from now if you fail to provide the EFFORT needed to turn your potential into your legacy. I hope that day never comes." Although Cena/Theory was clearly a match that WWE was preparing to showcase, it suddenly fizzled out. After the Wall Street Journal published an article calling out secret payments made by then WWE CEO and Chairman, Vince McMahon, Cena's advertised 20 year celebration came and went. Although the two brushed shoulders and shared some pointed words, nothing ever happened on the night to set up a SummerSlam encounter between the two. This left a lot of fans perplexed, as all the usual signs were there. Shortly after at Money In The Bank, Theory's path changed entirely. He was defeated in a feud against Bobby Lashley, loosing his United States Championship just as his run really seemed to be getting started. This came as another shock to fans, as a lot of time and energy had gone into his push prior to the event. Even more confusingly, Theory was announced as a surprise contestant in the Money In The Bank Ladder Match later that night. He went on to win the briefcase and enter the main title scene, rubbing elbows with the likes of Roman Reigns and Brock Lesnar. Epic Games partners with all kinds of different companies for crossover items in Fortnite. Disney brands like Marvel and StarWars are frequently showcased. It stands to reason that these crossovers are scheduled out several months in advance, just like big WWE matches. If this is the case, the pack seems to indicate that WWE and Epic Games timed its release with a planned John Cena match at SummerSlam to maximize on sales. Ultimately, we might never know for sure if a Cena/Theory match was scrapped at the last minute. However, this definitely seems to serve as a strong indicator in that direction. This leaves one last question to be answered. If there was a planned match, why was it canceled? Taking Cena's work in Hollywood into account, It can be assumed that he decided that it would be better to steer clear of the Vince McMahon situation. A tough call had to be made between a love for WWE and risking his public image and future opportunities. The match still sounds great and fans would love to see it! Now that Vince McMahon is retired, maybe it gets put back on the table?John Cena
